Six week diary of events soon to come! Whilst your here, have a look at what we got up to last year!
This six week holidays we are thinking of doing the athletics badge, and possibly the anglers badge too!
Six week diary of events of scout meetings at Bradwell woods 2007!
On one of our last meetings in HQ, our Skip Bob decided that for the rest of the six week holidays we are going to start meeting at Bradwel woods, so we can do some work to achieve the naturalist and forester badges.
And finally. . .
After 5 weeks,
of which everyone attended at least three sessions, our visits to Bradwell
ended.
The first four weeks saw us learning something about the natural habitat,
the differences between natural and disturbed areas and the different ground
conditions within. We saw some of the local inhabitants. A rabbit, badger
sets, insects, moths, a bird of prey, swallows and horses (not quite so wild).
We learnt plants bearing edible fruits, nuts and leaves. We also found the
source of good fire lighting kindling. The fire weed (rose bay willow herb),
thistle down, peeling birch bark and bull rush.
We saw grasses suited to marsh land alongside the bull rush. We examined the
damage caused by excavation machinery and how the scrubby land had been kept
that way by the feeding habits of the rabbits.
We went over several of the areas again on this the last night.
We saw how the ferns and bracken preferred the heavy dark soil made from rotted
vegetation. How the trees stayed on the precipice of clay cliffs in its compacted
soil structure.
We noticed that sadly, despite the actions of local government, the attempts
to engage the public in some of the glory of woodland had fallen foul of vandals.
A path skirting the wood between the A500 and the A34 would have been well
lit had not all but one light been smashed.
We took back some of the fire lighting material and made fire lighters for
future camps.
With only a little more work to do for the naturalist badge, we leave Bradwell
and return to warmth and shelter of the Hall.
The last part will be for each of us to detail one of the plants or animals
we encountered during our time at the wood.
